College support workers reach contract deal

Union members must still ratify the agreement, which replaces the previous deal that expired on Wednesday.

THUNDER BAY – The union representing full-time support staff at Ontario’s 24 colleges has agreed to terms on a new three-year contract with the College Employer Council.

OPSEU CAAT members must still ratify the agreement, which would replace the previous contract that expired on Aug. 31.

Terms of the agreement, which affects support staff at Confederation College, were not released, but will be made public once members have reviewed and ratified the new deal.

The two sides released a joint statement on Thursday acknowledging the contributions full-time support staff make to Ontario’s post-secondary education system, calling workers an integral part of the college sector.

“This tentative agreement recognizes the important work that full-time Support staff provide to colleges, students, and the Ontario post-secondary education system more generally. They are an integral part of the college sector, and colleges value the contributions they continue to make to the development of the higher education system.

“Both parties worked hard and engaged in productive dialogue. The negotiations were characterized by respectful and open dialogue, compromise and cooperation. The deal is a fair and reasonable one. The college sector is stronger because of this ongoing positive working relationship.”
