“Winterpalooza” brings 111 cadets to Kakabeka.

Cadets were able to participate in snow sculpture contests, cross-country skiing, carnival-style games, as well as evening social activities. KAKABEKA – Saturday was filled with plenty of fun games and activities for Northern Ontario cadets. 111 sea, army, and air cadets from all over the region were brought to the Royal Canadian Legion in Kakabeka for an event that highlighted team-building, leadership, and health and physical fitness.

Winterpalooza featured a number of winter-based activities and was the largest cadet get-together since the pandemic.

Zone Training Officer Captain Gaetan Mainville said that Winterpalooza is considered one of the largest cadet get-togethers in Northwestern Ontario.

“They’re from communities all over northern Ontario,” he said. “We have 16 cadet units from 11 communities as far west as Kenora and Red Lake, and as far east as Marathon.”

Cadets were able to participate in snow sculpture contests, cross-country skiing, carnival-style games, as well as evening social activities. The event was meant to highlight team-building, leadership, and health and physical fitness.

Chief Petty Officer First Class Biesenthal said that Winterpalooza is a great way for cadets to meet like-minded individuals and make new friends from outside their units.

“Typically, there’s a separation between all the three elements. There’s army, air, and sea cadets, but, in the end, we’re all just cadets and we’re in this program for the same purpose,” he said.

“I think it’s really good to have some camaraderie and team building between all those three units and an opportunity for those, especially out of town, to meet some friends in the program that aren’t just in their unit.
