Weather advisory issued for Thunder Bay area

Environment Canada says the city is in the path of two significant snowfalls this week.

THUNDER BAY — Environment Canada has issued a winter weather travel advisory for the Thunder Bay area, with a second significant weather event also expected later in the week.

Between 10 and 15 centimetres of snow will fall on the city Monday evening and overnight, likely followed by a couple of more centimetres by Tuesday afternoon.

Environment Canada said visibility will be reduced at times due to heavy snow and blowing snow.

Forecasters on Monday also issued a special weather statement for the city for the approach to the Christmas holiday weekend.

Snow is expected to begin Thursday for areas near Lake Superior, and may become heavy at times due to strong northerly winds Friday.

“While there is high confidence in a high impact winter storm, the details regarding wind speeds and specific snowfall amounts remain highly uncertain at this time,” the agency said.

It said travellers may need to consider altering their plans if conditions on the road become more dangerous.
