Kenora school closes class over COVID-19 case

Elementary school Pope John Paul II reported closure Sunday over one positive COVID-19 case.

A Kenora elementary school class has closed a classroom due to a COVID-19 case, just two days into its school year.

The Kenora Catholic District School Board announced on Sunday that a positive case had been confirmed at the Pope John Paul II school.

The board did not share further details of the case, citing privacy issues, but said it was working with the Northwestern Health Unit to minimize potential risks. Anyone identified as a contact of the case will be called and given instructions, the board said in a statement posted to its COVID-19 advisory web page.

Anyone not contacted by the school can continue to attend as usual.

The JK to Grade 6 school had just begun its first day of classes on Thursday, Sept. 2.

The school board reminded students and staff of their obligation to use the provincial school screening tool daily before attending school.

There was just one active case of COVID-19 in the Kenora area as of Thursday, when the Northwestern Health Unit last updated its public COVID-19 data. There were a total of five active cases across the NWHU.
