GERALDTON, ONT., — A Windsor, Ont., man was fined $5,000 after illegally discharging a high-powered rifle down a roadway while aiming at a moose in 2019.
On Oct. 19, 2019, conservation officers were on patrol on Moran Lake Road near the village of Caramat when Joseph Clark was stopped for inspection by officers, according to a news release issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry issued Jan. 29.
An investigation revealed Clark had shot multiple rounds at a cow moose down a maintained roadway. Clark pleaded guilty to carelessly using a firearm to hunt on Jan. 12 via teleconference in the Ontario Court of Justice in Geraldton, Ont.
Along with being fined, his hunting privileges have been suspended for one year and he is required to retake the mandatory hunter safety course for shooting down a roadway.
The ministry is reminding all hunters that discharging a firearm on or across a roadway is both illegal and dangerous. Hunters should be aware of their targets and beyond prior to discharging their firearm, the ministry said.
