Multiple charges laid after vehicle stopped for speeding

OPP found a weapon and drugs in a vehicle occupied by two Manitoba residents.

DRYDEN — Speeding is never a good idea, but two individuals found out the hard way it’s even more unwise to be carrying illegal items in your vehicle at the same time.

Members of the Dryden OPP detachment stopped an SUV on Highway 17 on Nov. 8 after observing it passing another vehicle at 135 km/h.

A search of the vehicle turned up a quantity of cannabis, psilocybin mushrooms, and brass knuckles.

Police posted a photo of the items after placing them on the vehicle’s roof.

The 29-year-old driver, from Winnipeg, was charged with speeding, unauthorized possession of a weapon, and driving with cannabis readily available.

His 28-year-old passenger, also from Winnipeg, was charged with unauthorized possession of a weapon and possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order.

After appearing in court, the two men were remanded out of custody pending an appearance before a judge early next month.

None of the charges has been proven.

It is Newswatch policy not to name people facing criminal accusations when we are unlikely to follow the case to its conclusion in the courts.
